Yoda can only be hit with low attacks, and cannot be grabbed. You say he sucks? Spawn in SC2 could easily be beat by someone button mashing as Raphael with the quick interrupt tap attack.

...no good player actually guards... thats a fallacy right there.
Have you ever played in a tournament at all dude? The only thing related to guarding anyone does is Guard Impacting. Evading is better in almost every way, especially in SC4 where you won't have your armor broken.

Yoda also doesn't move slowly, as far as I can see he attacks very fast compared to the rest of the people. True he makes mediocre damage, that i agree, he isn't slow except when he normally walks. He jumps a lot, which makes up for his slow walking and his attacks are pretty fast. Yoda the best char, but hes among the top imho. You should read other boards and see their opinions on yoda, its generally positive.
He is not very good at all.

Quote:
. From what ive seen when I play him, his attacks do a bit less damage then Nightmare's, making up for it with speed. Plus i haven't found out what siegfried's armor breaker was, which is already different from Nightmares which is just back y (as far as i remember)
It doesn't matter if he does a few points less damage, he is still faster and better in almost every way because of it. Also, no one cares about armor breaks, your opponent has to be a complete idiot if you land one.

That's great, I'm not talking about stupid idiot mashers. I'm talking about tournament play, okay.

Uh.

Yeah, okay, I have no clue what the hell you are talking about, but playing to win is a book written by a tournament level player and a person who works at Capcom and is helping make STHD be the best game it can be, and since I play Soul Calibur (and all fighting games) at the tournament level (or try to in most cases for games I am not the best at) I talk in the tournament sense. Mashing has nothing to do with the fact that Spawn is basically god tier in SC2, Yoda is mediocre, Siegfried is better than Nightmare, no one guards just guard impacts, Finishers are completely useless unless if your enemy has the IQ of 3 or mashs, Darth Vader is the best character (but probably only top tier at best) out of the custom characters, Apprentice is pretty useless except against mashers, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

If you add mashing and low level play to the equation, anything can be good because it's completely random. It's like trying to tell me Tease is good because you won 10 times with it in Random Arenas. No. It isn't.

you say that there is no such thing as "cheap play" since the goal is only to win, therefore winning by button mashing is a valid method IF it makes you win.

if you lose to raphs tap attacks im sorry but its not a "cheap" victory, its like losing to links OoB throws.

lol at "pro" gamers and their "pro" attitudes. when they lose to "low" players its because the opponent is "cheap", maybe its because they cant counter the single most basic moves in the game despite their oh so massive ego.

Tease is good in the right situation in the right hands. This applies to everything.

I don't even know how that makes sense... Evading is obviously a good tactic, but you need to block right after you messed up your move. Right after I screw up a chain, I try to avoid getting beat up by guarding. TBH i don't really know how anyone could play without guarding every so often. Oh and I wasn't aware that there was a SC4 tournament already...

Thats all you have to say? lol... Building on my reasons, I find that Yoda is even better at Ring Outs. I player as him yesterday and found that usually if i ever get an open window on a ledge i can push him out.

Well obviously with your no guarding playing style you don't think very highly about armor breaks, there wouldn't be any need. But for every normal person who does use guarding...like my brother who never stops blocking... Guard breaking is a good way to cope.

I wouldn't say Sigfried is any better than Nightmare, personally I view them about the same and pretty evenly matched..

No one mashes in tournaments because good players know how to counter it. Mind you, I wasn't the one who said Spawn sucks when fighting a mashing Raphael. A good Spawn is going to kick ass no matter what the hell he is fighting cause he is broken.

Guarding is disadvantageous in Soul Calibur because of the system. If you screwed up a chain that doesn't put you at enough frame disadvantage that you can still guard, then you can just backdash.

Ring Outs matter little too because very few people are going to get ringed out because they are good at 8WRing.

He sucks because he sucks at 8WR (he's pretty sluggish with it). Which is infinitely better than Guard in every way when you can do it well enough.

Nightmare is just too slow. The name of the game is speed. This is why fast characters or characters with powerful movement techniques always dominate the game. Spawn (flying and fast plus fireballs). Kilik (INSANELY FAST). Sophitia. (FAST). X (FAST.) CASSANDRA (FAST). Most of those characters don't even do the biggest damage but they are fast and can do their even-sometimes-mediocre damage consistently. And if they screw up, they can get out fast.

EDIT:
Mind you, I get where you are coming from. Most people instinctively want to Guard because well..THERES A GUARD BUTTON. And blocking from 2D fighters, etc. It took me a few months to break that habit, but you really should very very very very very very rarely be guarding because it is disadvantageous in the game. 8WR is infinitely better when you can do it correctly. The problem with doing 8WR correctly, is you have to understand the characters, their moves, and how their moves work, and most people can't do that because that is high level stuff. The only time you should Guard is if you'd get hit from 8WRing. If the move would hit you when you sidestep or backdash, you guard/GI.

Any tips? I've never been that great with fighters but I still enjoy them for some reason.

Ok, ill try it your way since my opinion is obviously biased due to lack of play and with the relentless attacks, i never really wanted to try out any other ways besides guarding...

I'm no tournament player here, but what works for me against everyone else I play is, when using Taki, bind her roll and her flip skills to the triggers/shoulder buttons (depending on what controller you are using). They are incredibly useful. The attacks that she uses when coming out of a roll are quite damaging, and her ability to flip over an opponent and land with a strike mid combo is pretty useful. Other than that, just learn her combos, like any other character, and remember she's fast but lower damaging. She's no Nightmare.

Any of them are great. I really like raphael, even being nerfed, hes still a beast on the field. Just play all of them and then stick with one and you should get really good.

I just love this series, I've been playing with Mitsurugi since the original Soul Edge game on PSX. <3
